The only stuff you need to change are under the Read Archive and you can add as many li lines for each entry. See sample records.

I think projecting is more when you attribute to someone else something that's more relevant or personal to you, in which case I don't really see how that applies since my point is I don't relate/can't really get with that in any meaningful way aesthetically or emotionally, not that I secretly do but want to displace it on another person or party or whatever.

Also I think this is just one way of articulating what a lot of people see as a broader or more 'genetic' problem with the genre (a problem of 'where it comes from') in that all the stuff about fixed sexual roles, tropeyness in character design easily being able to distinguish uke and seme, etc, are all kinda expressive of this being a genre that kind coalesced around the sexual fantasies of largely 'straight women'. Often the explorations of queerness don't go much farther than the ostensible vehicle for 'forbidden love' fantasies which are potentially problematic or whatever. This isn't really a criticism coming out of left field or anything, and I don't necessarily think there's anything fundamentally morally wrong with straight women using nominally queer stories for their own sexual exploration or whatever I just don't think you can really insist that that's not a thing or that might present a bit of a gap in taste preferences or whatever.

I actually like a lot of shoujo, but the stuff I tend to come across tends to be well recommended and have like good social values and emotional sensitivity and stuff, the bl and yaoi fields are comparatively less watered or fertile in general cuz demo and maybe the kinda shitty situation of queer relations generally being seen as more inherently 'sexual' or what have you so they may be a little less nuanced than a lot of good shoujo in terms of how they approach interpersonal relationships and stuff? That's just sort of my casual impression though I'm not really that into it I suppose.

>> No.2803724
Quoted By: >>2803727 >>2803729

I just meant the part where you sort of hypothesized that liking of that trope came from insularity or lack of imagination, which sounds like the kind of explanation people come up with for tropes that seem incomprehensible to them.

I relate to this, but it's probably just because I haven't read many BL lengthy enough to deepen the characters.

anyone got happy kuso life vol 2 raws?

>> No.2803727

I can understand that and I'm not exactly a BL scholar or expert by any stretch but I think it's a legitimate if blunt or cursory way of summarizing some of the more fixed dichotomies we tend to see in the medium, if that makes sense. The queering of things tends to be more about crossing or blurring those boundaries but often enough the roles or sensibility of the two romantic leads still seems like functionally as 'polarized' as stereotypical or 'ideal' straight relations which I think might speak to an implicit bias about what relationships are supposed to look like that queer people are generally less inclined to identify with or whatever. I know lots of bi guys who seem to like the more shoujo aesthetic and stuff though so I didn't mean to be that glib it's ultimately all a rich spectrum etc but to the extent that that does sort of characterize the medium it presents a bit of a block for me.

>> No.2803729
Quoted By: >>2803737

I think >>2803724 is right that since BL are usually short, it's by default a bit hard to achieve what shoujo does with countless volumes and no sex. Finding good one-volume shoujo is about as hard as good one-volume BL. Also BL's straight equivalent isn't shoujo but sex-included het romance (like TL and ladies' comics), which are not better at character and value development than BL, like, at all. Shoujo, being directed at kids and young teens, will focus way more on social values because its role is still considered 'educational' to the target group. BL/TL/GL, even when sfw no longer need to adhere since people assume it's not gonna be read by literal kids.

This pretty much encapsulates the chronic issue most gay guys have with BL; that at the end of the day they are very much just straight harlequin romance novels with a slight cosmetic sex variation for added lascivious effect. Most of us simply lament and resign ourselves to this fact, since, after all, where else are we gonna get these stories?

Personally, I’m excited for the day when Thailand, China or even the Philippines become the new locus for international BL, considering the majority of works coming from Japan have barely budged an inch from their established tropes in 30 years.

>How is thai dorama any better written than japanese BL? They even have the exact same "issue" of having women as the target audience.
Women being the target demographic isn’t really the issue, at least nor inherently so. An interesting development took place from 2016-18 in which some Thai BL were written in response and as a direct critique of many Japanese BL tropes. Sadly this seems to have regressed somewhat with the success of series like 2gether.
Perhaps, but I think we can both agree that some tropes and cliches are less annoying than others, no? Long-haired pretty boys in robes will eventually become stale, but at the very least it’s not “only you” or “rape him until he loves you”.

Mostly some parallels between Trevor's nephew and Gene, besides the fact they share the same name.
Spoilers I guess, but from ch. 4 onwards Trevor and Gene start introducing themselves as uncle and nephew because of their age difference and because it's easier than having to explain the actual nature of their relationship, and on ch. 5 we have Trevor's nephew asking him to take him to a steakhouse that Gene also asked in the past. It’s the entire point of having Trevor relaying his past as the framing device. The nephew is a directionless youth who can’t understand his uncle, but through the coarse of discovering his uncle’s past will come to some sort of epiphany regarding his uncle and himself or life in general, thus deepening their bond and resolving the conflict introduced at the manga’s beginning.

From 'I don't want to go anywhere with you and I don't care what you like' to 'Let's go to the steakhouse together', he's aleady discovered Trevor's past and changed his attitude, thus resolving the conflict. After the graduation Akira dissapears and Reiji goes to med school.
After few years he decides to find Akira again. From their old friends he heard that Akira's in the mafia, doing god knows what, selling drugs or whatever. They meet again and it turns out Akira's actually a prostitute now and doesn't want to talk to Reiji at all. Then he gets badly beaten up and contacts Reiji after all, who patches him up like the med student he is. They move to Reiji's apartment and become a couple, after a while Akira's mafia group disbands so no one will search for him any longer and he is free to do what he wants again (and he keeps living with Reiji). End.

He did react by pleading for the guy to stop, which is very much out of character. In the past, Tsugumi would beat the shit out of entire gangs of alphas while he was in heat. Except they don't, in fact, they don't want it to begin with and most of these stories involve them crying while getting raped (and not in a good way). Even tsugumi, one of the "better" omegas, had to be coerced into sex most of the time.

This entire universe is just an attempt at justifying the "rape me until I like it" trope, but without having to worry about real-world justifications for it. Because fate forefends people actually being honest about women wanting and enjoying sex.

Fuck this lazy-ass early 2000's form of localization. Just be more colloquial and casual, you don't gotta make everyone who isn't from Tokyo a comedy redneck! Different registers of language in English (like formal or colloquial) follow different rules, and different dialects do too. If you actively want to make Osaka-ben sound a bit more folksy, that's fine. But the way to do that isn't to write like you normally would, then substitute "yer" for "you're" and "ya" for "you" and call it a day. I mean, look at this shit:
>He asked me so I tried some jokes out with him.
>And it wasn't just him.
>A buncha other guys came ta me for practice today.
>And that's when I knew.
>Yer the best one.
That middle line is just "A bunch of other guys came to me for practice today" run through a hillbilly word filter. Try reading it out loud, it sounds like ass.
Translators need to read their shit out loud and not commit to a line until they can say it without it sounding like flies buzzing around a cowpat. Cadence and rhythm matter as much as word choice. Here, I'll take a whack:
>Yeah, I tried out some jokes with him 'cause he asked me to.
>Weren't just him, either...
>Whole buncha guys came over to practice with me today...
>And y'know what I figured out from all that?
>You're the best of the goddamn lot.
My version is mediocre. It's a bit too wordy, and the last line should probably be "You're the best of 'em all" to avoid inserting swears where there originally weren't any. But at least it sounds like something an actual human might say.

Actually anon has a point, since these dicks often have different anatomy (like alpha knots) and there are other differences in their reproduction systems in general (hormones, ass slick, ability to birth). >> No.2805227

Yeah, if you know exactly what the text is trying to say so basically if you understand the language. But if you do then no reason to mtl so it never happens. Literal or near literal translations of idioms and less common set phrases are a good sign as well as weird phrasing which is hard to correct if you don't know what's being said exactly. Grammar being correct but oddly backwards, especially in longer sentences. Poor choice of synonyms for the context (too formal, too informal, slighly wrong nuance). Very uniform style, because mtls always write the same. Also incorrectly split sentences. All could be corrected if someone tried very hard but since it'd be complete guessing, it'd produce something more natural but also very far from the original. (Point that I'm talking about Jap/Chin->Eng, maybe with very similar languages it wouldn't be so obvious)

>> No.2805228
Quoted By: >>2805239

Yep, you're right in saying that you can't just change the register to show a different dialect. That's why I mentioned different dialects also having different rules apart from different registers, but I didn't make my point clear enough. If translators are doing things right, they should be able to change to a more formal tone when necessary and still maintain the distinct feel of their chosen dialect. If anything, going all fake-yeehaw 2000's style gets them even more fucked when the characters need to talk more formally and the translators are stuck with the awkward comedic vocal tics they've committed to.
For example, staying Southern but going a bit more formal, the same lines from earlier could be
>I was just tryin' out some jokes with that man on his invitation. That's all.
>And he wasn't the only one there, either...
>A whole group of guys came on over to practice with me today...
>And y'know what I noticed?
>You're better'n all of them.
Once again, these are just off the top of my head. Forgive my mediocrity, just trying to provide examples.

So, weirdly, that's how some of Renta's stuff works at the moment. They use a professional MTL program and then have bilingual English and Japanese speakers proofread the MTL. IDK why they don't just get them to translate... I guess it's probably a lot cheaper?

Ofc it's cheaper to correct mistakes than do the whole work, but it's such a shitty practice. Shame on them especially when they charge like mad for that stuff, it'd understand it with Futekiya but Renta's expensive as fuck compared to just buying the same stuff raw.

I do disagree that your examples had a superior take on the experimentation to lovers trope, except for Anji’s, whose work I haven’t read.
Harada’s treatment is pretty much plotless porn and the drama feels incredibly dishonest and contrived, as even it’s own characters acknowledge. It also doesn’t help that the uke remains passive and undeveloped throughout.

Fumikawa’s treatment fares better, and has a decent twist in ch.2. But it’s too fantastical to take seriously, the characters and their development too cartoonish to feel genuine, and some of the jokes didn’t land so much for me. The uke’s naïveté is also pretty annoying at times.

That's simply not true. It might've stemmed from shoujo manga at its starting point but it's by no means shoujo subgenre at this point. Shoujo is defined by its 'children and young teens' demographic, while BL includes a variety of stories aimed at different ages.

Achstually, in Japan there isn't really much of a divide between "Shoujo" and "Josei", it's just Shoujo and they're for all women old and young, much like BL. But I'll forgive you for not knowing that, since most people don't.

Just something else to add, wether or not BL is a Shoujosei subgenre is up to debate.
Since the only definition Shoujosei has is that "it's manga aimed at female audience" then it isn't really a stretch to call BL a subgenre, since they're manga that are aimed at an specific kind of woman(fujoshi).
However, BL are usually kept separated from Shoujo on pretty much every website and physical store ever, so who knows really.

I know there are shoujo magazines that write stories that by content should categorize as 'josei', like Melody for example, but they still keep to various rules that allow them to pass as shoujo and be read by younger audience. That usually means stuff like no explicit sex scenes as well as some quite wierd moral restrictions. Of course there are series and even magazines made to appeal to audiences other than just the main demo, but they still have to pass within some frames of said main demo. Tons of BL do not pass within even the most loose frames of shoujo.

Ah well, then I guess Stigmata kinda does this? There has been chapters almost entirely dedicated to detective shit with little to no development from the main couple.

Why do you say that? Most BL are very similar to TL.

Yeah, and TL is also not a category of shoujo as it can depict some sex, smoking, alcohol and pathology much more than shoujo can. (which is not to say it's always forbidden for shoujo titles but explicit levels vary, it's connected to censorship laws) TL is generally grouped with Ladies' comics due to being aimed at a slightly older demographic.

Yup, and it's also read 'oppai'.
